The Cleveland Browns have signed quarterback Connor Shaw to their practice squad, it was announced Sunday night.

"Thrilled to remain with the @Browns & continue to play the game I love!" Shaw said via Twitter.

Players on the practice squad help serve as the scout team for future opponents. They are not eligible to play in a live game unless signed to the active roster. Practice squad players also are able to sign with another NFL team at any time.

Shaw this preseason was fighting for the third-string quarterback job with the Browns, behind Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel. Shaw was officially released by the Browns on Saturday but signed to the practice squad after clearing waivers. Shaw was competing with former Florida QB Rex Grossman, who was released by the Browns.

Shaw, in his first and most extensive NFL action of the preseason against the Redskins, led two fourth-quarter drives for Cleveland, completing 8-of-9 passes for 123 yards and a 45-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass as time expired. Washington won the game 24-23.

Also making rosters from the Gamecocks' 2013 team:

-- Defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles, after being released by the New York Giants, was signed by the New England Patriots.

-- Offensive lineman Ronald Patrick secured a spot on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.

-- Cornerback Jimmy Legree was added to the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad.
