A 24-year-old woman was killed in Gaston early Saturday morning after her car collided with an Amtrak train.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as Danielle A. Reed, 24, of Lexington.
The woman was driving a 2010 Ford sedan north on Mack Street a little after 2 a.m. when the vehicle went around the stop arms that were down indicating a train was coming, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. The driver was not wearing a seat belt when her car was struck by the oncoming train, investigators said.
No train passengers were injured in the collision, according to the highway patrol.
The train was headed to Miami, according to Dorothy Williams, a passenger who lives in Jacksonville, Fla. She said the train was stopped for at least three hours.
“Several people were talking about how they heard a noise, and some felt the impact,” Williams said.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
