A 25-year-old Kenyan won the half-marathon in Saturday’s Governor’s Cup, with three South Carolinians – one from Columbia – finishing in the top five.
Kiprono Kurgat, based in Chapel Hill, N.C., finished first in the field of runners, with a time of 1:05:16.40.
In the top five were three South Carolinians: Michael Banks, 28, of Charleston, finishing third with a time of 1:05:49.30; Eric Ashton, 46, of Columbia, in fourth with a time of 1:11:52.20; and Karl Walsh, 39, of Mount Pleasant, in fifth with a time of 1:12:09.36.
In the 8K, Kenyan Cleophas Ngetich, 25, of Chapel Hill finished first with a time of 0:23:34.73. Four Greenville residents rounded out the top five in the 8K: Adam Freudenthal, 25, at 0:23:50.09; Trent Binford-Walsh, 24, at 0:24:10.26; Rick Flynn, 27, at 0:24:30.17; and Chris Caldwell, 24, at 0:25:30.26.
Temperatures at the start of Saturday’s event through downtown Columbia were around 40.
