Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents say they found a loaded handgun in a passenger's carry-on bag at Columbia Metropolitan Airport this weekend.
Officers found the loaded .380 caliber handgun in a passenger’s carry-on bag around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a release.
TSA immediately alerted airport police, who took possession of the bag and cited the passenger on local charges.
Firearms may be transported in checked baggage (provided they are declared to the airline in a proper carrying case and unloaded), they are prohibited in carry-on bags, according to TSA spokesman Mark Howell.
This is the third firearm discovered at the security checkpoint by TSA officers at Columbia Metropolitan Airport this year, according to Howell. Three were found at the airport checkpoint in 2013.
