Students and faculty at Lower Richland High School were evacuated briefly after reports of a gas leak at the school.
Brick Lewis, a Columbia Fire Department spokesman, said firefighters and SCE&G workers responded to a call of a natural gas leak at the school at 7:15 a.m.
Lewis said there was no rupture in any gas lines, but SCE&G workers did have to secure a valve at the rear of the school’s structure to stop the leak. Firefighters began running ventilation to clear out any residual gas fumes from the building.
Lewis said gas levels in the school are no longer dangerous for students and faculty, and they will be returning to the building shortly.
