Columbia Fire hazmat crews and University of South Carolina police are investigating a chemical spill at USC's Horizon building, located at Main at Blossom streets. One person was ‘decontaminated for a solvent spill’ and taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure, fire department spokesman Brick Lewis said.
The building was evacuated and the 500 block of Main Street closed briefly while crews inspected the property.
The university's Carolina Alert system released alerts about the spill Friday afternoon on its Twitter feed and webpage.
Fire investigators encourage people to stay away from the area to avoid traffic.
