Natural Christmas trees can be recycled into mulch beginning the day after Christmas.
For Columbia residents, it’s as easy as putting the tree – minus all decorations – at the curb.
For others, 24 locations in Richland and Lexington counties have been established for the “grinding of the greens,” recycling that keeps greenery out of the landfill and creates mulch for spring gardeners.
Drop-off continues through Jan. 8.
Keep the Midlands Beautiful asks only that participants remove the tree from its stand and remove ornaments, lights, garland, wires, string or ties. Drop off trees only, no wreaths or other greenery.
Free mulch from the recycled trees will be available at 8:30 a.m. until it’s gone on Jan. 10 at Seven Oaks Park, 200 Leisure Lane, and at the State Farmers Market, 3483 Charleston Highway.
