The extension of USC to the Congaree River will be the transformative link from the river to the city core. But, a decade from now, that likely still will be several years away, trailing behind major changes to Greene Street closer to today’s campus.
Waterfront Park between Huger Street and the river is to be the sparkling centerpiece of Innovista and the riverfront. For now, folks will be just building around it.
New riverfront condos planned on Knox Abbott Drive in Cayce and near Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia will add to the boom.
Greenway pedestrian bridges over the Saluda River in West Columbia and the Broad River in Columbia, along with a small bridge over the Columbia Canal near EdVenture, are expected to open the city core to more bike and pedestrian traffic.
• Will Waterfront Park and the USC connection along the river be as grand as the plans, and how much longer will it take?
• Will those who live, work or play along the river be willing to walk or bike across the busy, four-lane corridors of Huger and Assembly streets to city-core businesses?
