West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall on Monday became the third Republican running for sheriff.
He entered the race to succeed former sheriff James Metts, who stepped down in mid-December before pleading guilty to a federal felony charge of conspiracy to harbor illegal immigrants at the county jail.
Tyndall joins Richland County deputy Justin Britt and assistant Lexington police chief Jay Koon in the GOP match.
Former deputy and police office Jim Crawford is running as an independent.
The primary ballot is March 3, with a run-off race two weeks later if necessary. The final vote is April 21, with the winner serving through 2016.
