Columbia police officials have identified the man accused of driving under the influence and hitting a utility pole that downed power lines along Harden and Gervais streets, forcing motorists to find an alternate way to work Tuesday morning.
Jennifer Timmons, a department spokeswoman, said Darrell Allen Thompson, 25, was charged with DUI and hit-and-run resulting in property damage in connection with the incident.
Timmons said Thompson allegedly struck the utility pole at 2 a.m. Tuesday morning while he was driving impaired.
Harden and Gervais streets have been temporarily close while SCE&G crews are attempting to fix the damaged pole, Timmons said.
Motorists in the area will need to find an alternate route around the area, and be cautious of emergency crews working to clear the scene.
