Richland County officials recovered the bodies of two missing teenage girls from the cold waters of Lake Carolina this afternoon.
County coroner Gary Watts identified the girls as Jevonn Lawson, 14, and Chantel Lawson, 16, both of 276 Bassett Loop, in the Lake Carolina community.
The girls were reported missing Saturday evening by their parents.
An autopsy will be held Monday morning. As of Sunday night, appearances indicate that the girls - neither of whom was a good swimmer - slipped off a concrete spillway, fell into deep water and drowned, Watts said.
“It’s a horrible, tragic situation,” Watts said.
The bodies were recovered by a Richland County Sheriff’s Department dive team.
