BEAUFORT — Enrollment is climbing to record levels this fall at the Technical College of the Lowcountry and the University of South Carolina Beaufort, officials said.
Technical College enrollment is nearing 2,500 students for the first time, according to unofficial numbers released Monday.
About 400 more students enrolled this fall than in 2008, an 18 percent increase. Officials expect that number to grow as students register for shorter, more concentrated classes later this fall, spokeswoman Leigh Copeland said.
The recession has motivated many of the new enrollees, Copeland said. About 50 percent of students this fall are at least 25 years old, compared to about 44 percent last fall.
At USC’s Beaufort campus, enrollment is up about 16 percent from a year ago to an all-time high of 1,665, and officials expect more students for the second fall term.
Spokeswoman Deborah Reynolds said the school has added both traditional students and older ones.
