CHARLESTON - The tall ship Spirit of South Carolina is safely back in home port after spending the summer sailing off the Northeast.
The ship arrived in Charleston Harbor on Thursday.
This past summer, the Spirit of South Carolina conducted five educational voyages and participated in three tall ship events. It was also the flagship for the 2009 Charleston to Bermuda Race.
One of the highlights was when the vessel docked in Kings Point, N.Y., and spent two weeks hosting students from the Charleston area.
Next week, the Sea Spray Scouts program resumes with middle school students taking day sails out of Charleston. During the first two years of the program, more than 4,000 students have sailed on the Spirit.
