Three Columbia women collected more than 19,000 disposable diapers Saturday for needy families.
"It just totally blew our expectations out of the water," organizer Lynn Cooper said.
Cooper and two other young mothers, Amanda Payne and Caroline Milliken, planned the diaper drive after seeing an ad campaign by BlueChoice Medicaid noting that poor families often must ration the expensive diapers. They asked people to bring donations to Heathwood Park, and Cooper said people came by "nonstop" all morning.
The three also collected $520 for Harvest Hope Food Bank, which will distribute the diapers in about a week.
