People visiting South Carolina beaches this weekend need to look out for Hurricane Igor, even though the powerful storm isn’t expected to come within 1,000 miles of the state.

The National Weather Service warns that large waves pushed up by Igor could cause rip currents. Waves are expected to grow each day this week, peaking about around 6 feet on Sunday. The long, period waves from distant hurricanes are popular with surfers but dangerous for swimmers because they often cause rip tides.
