Two women were killed Friday night in Newberry County when the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta they were riding in crashed into an ambulance that had its lights and siren on.
The accident happened at 9:20 p.m. Friday night on U.S. 76, about seven and a half miles west of Newberry, said Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the state Highway Patrol. The two women were 22 and 23 years old and both had addresses out of Germany, McDougald said. The Newberry County Coroner’s Office has not yet released their names because they want to notify their families first.
The driver of the Volkswagen, Caroline Smith, 20, of Pawleys Island, moved onto the right shoulder to let the ambulance pass, McDouglad said. But the Volkswagen returned to the road before the ambulance could pass and the two vehicles collided, McDougald said.
Five other people, three in the Volkswagen and two in the ambulance, were injured and transported to the hospital. The two people in the ambulance were EMS workers.
