The city of Greenwood decided to hang on to the giant snowflake and poinsettia Christmas lights that it had put up for auction early this month.
City manager Charlie Barrineau said news reports about the auction prompted many calls from city residents trying to save the lights. Those calls combined with low auction bids convinced Barrineau to pull the lights from the state surplus auction. The high bid at the time was about $1,600.
Rather than give up the lights well below their value, Barrineau said the city will refurbish some of them and incorporate them into the city’s new Toyland-themed Christmas display.
