Columbia police arrested a 48-year-old man Friday in the theft of a Ford Explorer left running and unlocked near a Five Points bar.
Robert Jenkins Jr., is charged with grand theft of the 2002 SUV that was found Friday morning on its side on the Taylor Street side of Benedict College, police said. The vehicle smashed through a brick pillar and fence before it hit a tree. The driver was gone.
Friday afternoon along Greene Street, a police officer saw a man fitting the description of the car-theft suspect. Jenkins was arrested.
The case prompted Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott to remind motorists never to leave their unattended vehicle running and unsecured.
