Columbia police are investigating what appears to be the suicide of an armed robbery suspect who fled from officers Tuesday night.
As told by the police, an unidentified male robbed the Family Dollar store at 2800 Leesburg Road at gunpoint around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday. After striking an employee, the suspect fled in a white Ford sport utility vehicle. A short time later, The China Palace Restaurant at South Beltline Boulevard and Garners Ferry Road was robbed by someone fitting the description of the suspect in the Family Dollar robbery and driving a similar vehicle.
Police identified the suspect’s vehicle heading east on Garners Ferry Road and began a pursuit with sirens blaring and lights flashing.
The chase came to an end several miles later after the suspect’s vehicle turned into the Walgreens parking lot at 7801 Garners Ferry Road.

When police approached the vehicle, they found an unidentified male with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Columbia police, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and Richland County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
