National Weather Service meteorologists are investigating reports of a tornado touching down in Newberry County.
Dan Miller of the weather service office said there was an unconfirmed report from an amateur radio operation Monday evening that a tornado touched down about 3 miles southwest of Prosperity.
The Newberry County Sheriff's Office said there had been a tornado and that there were reports of damage.
Miller said there were reports of trees down, not just in Newberry County, but across central South Carolina as a line of storms preceded a cold front passing through the Carolinas.
Never miss a local story.
Miller said if the sheriff's office reports that there was damage, the weather service will send someone out to survey that damage and determine what kind of storm hit the area.
