A Department of Natural Resources diver late Thursday afternoon pulled a body out of the Wateree River at the U.S. 378 bridge.
“We got a call earlier that a fisherman had fallen off the dock and gone into the water,” said DNR spokesman Lt. Robert McCullough.
The man has been identified as James Richardson, 58, of Downes Grove Road, Columbia, and he died from drowning, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.
McCullough said the body was pulled from the water at 4:48 p.m.
He referred further questions to the Richland County Coroner’s office. Coroner’s officials were on the scene and not immediately reachable by telephone.
Boats from the Columbia-Richland Fire Service and the Sumter Fire Departments also assisted.
McCullough said the incident should remind people to be attentive around water.
“It’s the start of the warm season, and we want everybody to be safe,” he said.
The location is about 20 miles east of downtown Columbia.
