A 44-year-old man riding a motorcycle in Lexington County was killed over the weekend when his 2006 Honda motorcycle struck the rear of a dump truck as he was riding on U.S. 321, officials said.
The driver, identified as Keith Scott Hanson, of West Columbia, died at the scene of the incident, said county coroner Harry Harman.
Hanson was not wearing a helmet, Harman said.
A 28-year-old female passenger on the motorcycle, Nicole Gantt, who was not wearing a helmet either, was flown by a medical helicopter, to Palmetto Richland hospital, a specialized trauma center.
The driver of the 1995 Ford dump truck, George Holliday, 56, was not injured, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. He was restrained by a seat belt, said Trooper Billy Elder.
“Speed was believed to have been a factor,” Elder said.
Both vehicles were going northbound on U.S. 321 less than a mile from Cayce.
The crash is under investigation by the coroner’s office and the S.C. Highway Patrol.
