A passenger died at the scene of a Lexington County traffic incident early Sunday after the car he was riding in ran a stop sign and overturned several times on Platt Springs Road, about eight miles east of Lexington, officials said.
Christopher Shawn Mitchell, 22, of Lexington, died of multiple head and body injuries, said coroner Harry Harman. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Mitchell was riding in a 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven north on Cross Road by Jonathan Dwane Frye, 23, of West Columbia, Harman said.
Frye was transported to Palmetto Richland with serious injuries, officials said. No information was available on whether he was wearing a seat belt.
Never miss a local story.
After going through the stop sign, the car — which was traveling at a high rate of speed — hit a ditch and then struck a building, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The incident happened at the intersection of Sandy Springs and Platt Springs roads about 1:40 a.m. Sunday.
No other vehicles were involved.
The coroner’s office and the Highway Patrol are investigating.
