An oscillating fan was the cause for fire trucks to be deployed to a local theater in downtown Columbia Saturday night. Five fire trucks from Columbia-Richland Fire Department were called to Town Theatre, at 1021 Sumter St., around 6:30 p.m. after several people inside the building reported a burning or electrical smell. Firefighters on the scene said an oscillating fan left on in one of the dressing rooms was the culprit. About 20 people, mostly cast members from the production “South Pacific,” were in the building at the time and were asked to evacuate. Officials with the fire department said multiple fire trucks are often deployed when a commercial structure where large crowds may be present is threatened.
