After years of planning, construction and preparation, the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center has opened its doors.
Friday’s black-tie optional kickoff gala event, “A Formal Evening with Roberta Flack,” was sold out, and those lucky enough to secure a ticket said they were dazzled by the facility.
State Sen. Hugh K. Leatherman of Florence was just as excited about the center’s opening as everyone else. “I look at this facility, see that crowd inside and think, ‘Am I really in Florence?’” he said before Flack took the stage. “Normally, people go out of town for this kind of facility we have here and the program that we’re expecting to enjoy tonight.” The center’s opening weekend continued Saturday with “An Evening with Judy Collins,” followed by a performance by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Spiritual Ensemble today and the Florence Symphony Orchestra on Monday.
