An Elgin mother faces aggravated assault charges for burns her 7-year-old daughter suffered after being submerged in a hot bath Sunday as punishment, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department announced today.
Shelby Gardner, 39, is accused of forcibly putting the child in the water as discipline for allegedly lying about taking a bath the night before, officials said.
Investigators said Gardner first put soap in her daughter’s mouth Sunday. She then thought the girl was still lying about taking a bath, so she put her in the hot tub, and put more soap in her mouth, according to reports.
Medical personnel at Providence Northeast Hospital notified deputies of the burns after the girl was brought in for treatment.
The youngster has been transferred to a medical center in Augusta that specializes in care of burns, officials said.
