Susan Hoots is returning as Okra Strut administrator. She held the post for five years until resigning in 2004.
Town Council members approved her hiring late Tuesday 3-1. Her husband Harvey, a longtime council member, abstained in the decision.
The selection of Susan Hoots, one of two applicants for the post, was recommended by festival organizers who wanted someone experienced with the gathering’s operation.
Mayor Hardy King opposed the choice, saying it seems to be nepotism. But state ethics officials told town leaders there is no problem.
The post — a temporary assignment renewable annually — pays $12,000 a year. She is an independent consultant and not a town employee.
