Lexington County Council decided Tuesday to stay with Joe Mergo as its top aide instead looking elsewhere.
Mergo becomes county administrator two months after taking over supervision of the daily performance of 1,300 county employees for what was billed as a tryout.
His promotion comes after nearly five years as deputy administrator. He previously held other supervisory posts for trash collection and animal control. The decision continues a trend of county leaders selecting their top aide from within instead of going outside.
