Local governments in the Midlands are encouraging residents to sign up for an alert system about air pollution.
As an incentive, officials are entering participants in a drawing for a free electric lawn mower, according to a news release from Richland County.
To be eligible, residents of Richland or Lexington counties must sign up for the air-quality forecast at www.enviroflash.info by Aug. 1. The site is sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency. Subscribers must provide basic information, including email address and zip code, to receive daily alerts when ozone or air pollution is at unhealthy levels. Another way to sign up is by following @MidlandsRegion on twitter.
Those most susceptible to pollution problems include the young, people with asthma and the elderly.
