Before the stormy cold front hit on Wednesday, the temperature reached a daily record high of 82 degrees at Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

That broke the Jan. 30 record of 81 set in 1975. It also tied with several days as the third hottest January day in Columbia history, dating back to 1887, according to the Southeast Regional Climate Center.

It ends a month marked by several unusual warm spells. Columbia has hit 80 degrees in January only 20 days in 125 years, and three of those 80-degree January days were this year.

But January 2013 had enough colder-than-normal days that it won’t rank in the top 10 of the warmest Januarys in city history
