A trip to a kayaking competition in Maryland for a 23-year-old Greenville resident turned tragic when she was killed Thursday in an accident on the Potomac River, authorities said Friday.

Shannon Christy was trying to kayak down Great Falls, said Lucille Bauer of the Montgomery County Police and Rescue. “It’s a terrible tragedy.”

Christy worked at Confluence Watersports in Mauldin, where a spokeswoman said employees declined to comment. “We just found out about this,” she said.

An extensive search began at 4:17 p.m. Thursday, Bauer said, with fellow kayakers joining Montgomery County police and fire rescuers before Christy was found at about 8 p.m.

Christy was pronounced dead at the scene, Bauer said.

The teams are “experienced kayakers who were searching” for nearly four hours, she said.

Christy went over Great Falls while attending the Potomac River Festival, she said. She “was an experienced kayaker,” Bauer said.

She said it isn’t unusual for experienced kayakers to go over Great Falls.
