Nearly $600,000 worth of stolen heavy machinery was found on Tuesday in a field, Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in a news release.
The equipment, including front-end loaders valued at $200,000 each, were stolen from the 5000 block of Platt Springs Road.
On Tuesday, one of several businesses affected by the theft, helped investigators locate one of the front-end loaders, Koon said.
After circling the area, “they noticed several pieces of work equipment in a field,” the news release stated.
The sheriff’s department is still trying to determine the timeline of when the thefts occurred, said Colby Gallagher of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities aren’t sure how the thief or thieves were able to take the large equipment although at least one item was operated with a ‘universal key’ Gallagher said.
“We’re working with the Lexington Police Department to identify the people responsible for taking this equipment from businesses owners trying to make an honest living,” Koon said.
