Two officers recovered a body from the Congaree River where a swimmer went missing over the weekend, a state official said Tuesday.
Divers with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources had been searching for days for a man who went missing on Sunday while attempting to swim across the river with three others without wearing life vests, said Capt. Robert McCullough, spokesman for the agency.
None of the swimmers have been identified by officials. A coroner will have to confirm that the body found is that of the missing swimmer, McCullough said.
The incident took place Sunday around 11:30 a.m. when rescue crews were dispatched to the Gervais Street bridge to reports of four swimmers in distress. The river’s strong current forced one swimmer to make it to some rocks near the middle of the river, while two others were helped by a civilian.
