The McDonald’s of the future has opened ... in Cayce.
A newly remodeled McDonald’s restaurant at 2929 Charleston Highway is the first in the Columbia area to be tricked out with new features intended to make service quicker and more enjoyable.
In the new restaurant, a customer can avoid lines at the counter by ordering at a self-service kiosk and paying with cash, card or smart phone. He or she is then issued a Blue Tooth “table tent” marker and an employee brings the food to the table.
The restaurant also features digital menus inside and at the drive-through lanes along with a modern decor and more indoor seating.
“This is the first of its kind here,” said Sanders Goodfellow, operations manager for Valdes Management, which owns 11 of the 51 McDonald’s in the Midlands.
There are are more than 14,000 McDonald’s nationwide. “And they’re trying to get all restaurants updated by 2020,” Goodfellow said.
Other restaurants in the Augusta and Greenville areas have already received the improvements, he said.
Cecil Fletcher, a motivational speaker and Lyft driver from Columbia, liked the experience as he ordered breakfast at the Cayce store on Wednesday.
“It was very simple,” he said. “Very user friendly.”
