Batesburg-Leesville Town Councilman Steve Cain turned himself in Wednesday at the Lexington County law enforcement complex to face charges of not paying child support.
He surrendered voluntarily to deputies and will be kept in jail pending a hearing Thursday, sheriff’s spokesman Maj. John Allard said.
Cain, 47, owes more than $14,100 in unpaid support for two children, officials say.
Meanwhile, a hearing is set for as soon as June 15 on nonresidency claims against him.
Other council members will receive a report from an investigation into complaints from some residents that Cain no longer lives in the community and decide whether he can remain in office.
Cain, often at odds with other town leaders, hasn’t attended a council meeting since Oct. 13.
He has said he left town temporarily until settlement of a lawsuit seeking damages for injuries allegedly suffered during ejection from a council meeting in March 2014.
But he insists he remains in touch with events, using email to give his ideas and opinions to residents and some town leaders.
Cain has been a councilman for 10 years, running twice unsuccessfully for mayor..
