Firefighters rescued four people late Saturday night after the group got lost in a canoe on the Congaree River.
The Columbia Fire Department got the call about a canoe in a distress at about 9 p.m., department spokesman Capt. Brick Lewis said.
“We were fortunate we had communications with them via cellphone to try to triangulate where they were,” Lewis said.
Firefighters came upon the group around 11 p.m., Lewis said. They first located one member of the group who was attempting to swim to shore, then found the other three people a short distance away in the canoe.
Paramedics took one person to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Responders left the scene at about 12:40 a.m.
