Local civil rights icon Minnie Agatha Kennedy, who was at Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington in 1963 and later on the groundbreaking Selma to Montgomery, Ala. trek, died Tuesday at a Georgetown nursing home. She was 97.
Kennedy, born on Christmas Day 1916 in servants’ quarters at Hobcaw Barony, left the segregated South and became a New York City educator, professor and champion of equal rights who lived to attend the inauguration of the nation’s first black president.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church, with a private inurnment. Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
