Civic activists and nonprofit organizations in the Eau Claire community of Columbia will be commemorating the recent 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech Saturday with a family-friendly public event.
The event, dubbed “Restoring the Dream,” will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. in Hyatt Park, at North Main Street and Monticello Road. The rain location is inside Hyatt Park’s Moss Gymnasium Community Center.
Planned activities include a dramatic reading of King’s speech, to be delivered by actor and storyteller Darion McCloud. The program also will include musical performances by local artists; a service award presentation to Durham and Mabel Carter of Columbia; recognition of elders from the North Columbia area who fought for civil rights during the March on Washington 50 years ago; and a salute to police officers and school teachers in the North Columbia area.
The keynote speaker is civil rights activist and author James Felder.
