A 34-year-old Irmo man was charged with murder on Wednesday in the death of 51-year-old Candice Pierce, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said.
Pierce’s body was discovered on Saturday, November 19, by a man and his son who were clearing land on the 200 block of Twin Gate Road in Irmo.
Leads developed in the case led investigators to Lloyd Gareth Shand of Aderley Oak Drive, Lott said.
Shand, an acquaintance of Pierce, allegedly was among the last to see her before she was reported missing by a friend on September 20, 2016. Pierce had missed medical appointments which was unusual for her, Irmo police chief Joe Natesn said.
Never miss a local story.
Richland County coroner Gary Watt determined that Pierce died as the result of blunt force trauma.
Investigators believe Shand “physically assaulted the victim resulting in her death,” Lott said.
Shand was being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center Wednesday afternoon.
