A meetup with a stranger to purchase a car listed on Craigslist led to an armed robbery, officials said.
The victim arranged to meet up with Justin Allen Penzes, 28, in Lexington County after Penzes listed a car for sale on Craigslist, according to a news release from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said the two were supposed to meet at a truck stop, but Penzes reportedly called the victim to say he could not because he was having car trouble, the release stated.
The two then decided to meet at a new location on Pond Branch Road in Lexington County to complete the transaction.

Investigators believe the suspect then pulled a gun on the victim and took some cash, the release stated.
The victim had a passenger in a vehicle at the time of the robbery, and the two were able to get a license plate number as the suspect drove away.
Deputies arrested Penzes on the 1700 block of Two Notch Road a short time later, Koon said.
Koon said Penzes had active warrants out of Saluda County for armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Lexington County deputies charged Penzes with armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Penzes is being held in the Lexington County Detention Center after a judge denied bond.
Koon said this incident serves as a reminder to complete person-to-person transaction in a well-lighted and well-traveled public place.
“Consider using the parking lot or the lobby of a local law enforcement agency or a location that you know has a working surveillance system, such as a major shopping center,” Koon said.
