A man accused of fatally stabbing another at a Richland County bar has turned himself in, officials say.
Robert Xavier Geter, 35, was charged with murder and attempted murder after he turned himself in at the Richland County Sheriff’s Department headquarters Saturday, according to a statement released by Sheriff Leon Lott Sunday.
Geter is accused of getting into a verbal altercation that turned physical at Culler's bar on Monticello Road north of Columbia around 1 a.m., Lott said.
After several of the bar’s patrons broke up the fight, Geter pulled out a knife and began to stab James Lewis, 35, in the upper body as Lewis was attempting to walk out of the bar, Lott said.
Another patron, Clarence Stone, attempted to break up the assault, Lott said. As a result, Stone also was stabbed in the upper body by Geter. Geter then fled the scene before deputies arrived. Both victims were taken to a local hospital where Lewis was later pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.
Investigators were able to identify Geter with the help of witnesses at the bar, Lott said.
Geter was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
