A suspect committed suicide following a traffic stop Friday morning in Chester County, the coroner says.
Maurice Jeter, whose age was not available, shot himself, Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker said.
He was not shot by the deputy, Tinker said, and the policeman was not injured.
Tinker would not say where Jeter shot himself. After an autopsy, he officially ruled Jeter's death a suicide.
The deputy, who has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, has been working for the Sheriff's Office since January 2013, said Sheriff's Office Maj. Mary Anne Tolbert. She would not release the deputy's name.
The incident happened at 968 Shallowbrook Drive off S.C. 72. It began as an attempted vehicle stop on Saluda Road that ended at the home.
Jeter was the driver, Tolbert said.
Circumstances of the traffic stop and subsequent shooting were not immediately available.
SLED spokesman Thom Berry said he was unable to discuss specific details of the shooting since it's an ongoing investigation. He said the agency sent crime scene units and agents from Columbia to begin looking at what led to Jeter's death.
He said he did not know the name of the officer.
SLED is the primary law enforcement agency that investigates officer-involved shootings statewide.
