A Union man was arrested Friday after police say he left a 2-month-old boy who had recently had surgery alone.

Christopher Shane Vaughan, 39, of 1208 W. Main St., Apt. 3-A, was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, an arrest warrant states.

According to an incident report, a woman came to check on the baby about 8 p.m. and found the infant in his “bouncy seat” alone in the apartment. The woman told an officer that she was at the apartment for 20 minutes before Vaughan arrived. The infant had recently undergone surgery for stomach issues, the report states.

Vaughan told police that he hadn’t been gone long, and had gone across the street to use the phone because he couldn’t get in touch with the child’s mother, the report states. Officers noted that Vaughan appeared to be intoxicated and smelled of alcohol. The child’s mother later arrived and also smelled of alcohol, according to the report.

The Department of Social Services responded and placed the child in the custody of a family member, the report states.

Vaughan remained at the Union County Jail Monday on a $10,000 bond.
