Fund grows for family who lost two children in fire

More than $14,000 has been pledged to help Breann Bennett and her family.

A fund established to help a Richland County family dealing with the loss of two small children has exceeded expectations.

When the GoFundMe page was established on Thursday — a day after Breann Bennett lost her two children, Jamarion, 5, and Reghin, 18 months, in a fatal apartment fire in Irmo — the goal was to raise $10,000 to cover funerals for the children and other expenses for the family.

As of Friday night, that fund has grown to more than $14,000 — and it's still going. Follow the progress or donate yourself at the www.gofundme.com/breanangels.

Fire officials said the fire started as an electrical failure and ignited a Christmas tree. The children's father and firefighters were unable to get to the children, who were sleeping on the second floor when the fire started, in time.

Services for Jamarion and Reghin will be held at Bible Way, 2440 Atlas Road, Columbia, at 2 p.m. Sunday.

A second fund established to help three other families with children at nearby Seven Oaks Elementary School who were impacted by the fire has raised more than $4,000. You can find more information about that fund at www.gofundme.com/Stuky0.
