Coroner IDs victim in fatal hit-and-run on Broad River Road

A 51-year-old Chapin man was killed Saturday night after he was thrown from his motorcycle and then hit by another vehicle.

A 51-year-old Chapin man was killed Saturday night after he was thrown from his motorcycle and then hit by another vehicle.

That vehicle, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones, left the scene. The crash occurred near Broad River Road’s intersection with Bickley Road in Richland County near Interstate 26.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the victim as Robert Dale Soland III of Chapin.

Soland was driving a 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle east on Broad River Road shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday when he left the roadway to the right, lost control and was thrown from his vehicle, Jones said. He was not wearing a helmet. The S.C. Highway Patrol has identified the victim as a 51-year-old Chapin man.

A second vehicle, possibly a late-model GMC Terrain SUV (2010-2013), blue in color, then hit the man and left the scene.

Jones said officials are seeking that vehicle, which possibly has undercarriage damage and may be missing its rear center plastic hitch area cover.
