The Beaufort Police Department has notified the Marine Corps that it is investigating allegations that a Corps employee raped a 17-year-old Hilton Head Island High School student in November.
The department went to the school on Nov. 18 after receiving a report that a rape took place two days earlier at Cross Creek apartment complex in Beaufort, according to a police report.
A police spokeswoman on Friday declined to provide additional information about the incident, saying investigators still have not determined if a crime was actually committed.
"We do not believe the public is at risk or in any danger. ... We will release additional information as it becomes available," Cpl. Hope Able said.
The Beaufort Police Department has notified the Marine Corps, according to police Deputy Chief Dale McDorman.
Attempts Friday to reach Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort were unsuccessful.
Able says the rape allegation is the same incident referred to in a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report filed at about the same time.
Deputies were speaking with a student in an unrelated investigation when they learned of a possible inappropriate relationship between a 17-year-old female student and an employee of the Marine Corps, the Sheriff's Office report says.
The girl confided in the other student that she had sex with the employee at the "beginning of the year," according to the report.
