A North Carolina man was charged in connection with a 14-year-old girl being sexually assaulted and later having his child, according to a police report.
Melvin Gene McMahan, 55, of Lincolnton, N.C., surrendered to police on Monday and was charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor and incest in connection with the girl becoming pregnant and giving birth following the incidents in 2011, police said.
McMahan is being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $21,000 bond, according to jail records.
McMahan had been wanted since the girl's mother reported the incidents in August to police, according to the report. The girl's mother told police that she learned of an inappropriate relationship between McMahan and her daughter that occurred between June and August 2011 while they lived in North Myrtle Beach.
The woman said she secretly had DNA testing done on the baby because the girl, who was 14, refused to reveal the identity of the baby's father, according to the report. The tests showed McMahan was the father of the baby. The woman said she was concerned about a possible relationship between the teen and McMahan before the test results confirmed her suspicions.
The girl and McMahan are related, but The Sun News is not identifying the relationship because we do not identify victims of sexual assaults.
