A 26-year-old Charleston man is the first charged in last week’s kidnapping of a 4-month-old in Orangeburg County.

Rondell Washington has been charged with kidnapping, burglary, assault and battery and neglect of a child following an investigation into the Jan. 14 incident in Holly Hill. Orangeburg County Sheriff’s deputies say seven men entered a Holly Hill home, hitting a 52-year-old woman in the head with a gun and grabbing the small child. The child was located a short time later — unharmed but alone on the side of the road in Berkeley County.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced the charges Wednesday, when Washington was arraigned. Ravenell said Washington was picked out of a photo line-up by a victim in the case.

“We will not stop looking for the misfits who entered this home, physically and mentally abusing a family, and removing a helpless child from her caregivers,” Ravenell said in a release.

“Our investigation won’t stop until all the persons have answered to their charges.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 803-534-3550 or CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC.
