Authorities say three people have died in a head-on collision caused by a 28-year-old woman who was drinking on her birthday and drove the wrong way on Interstate 77 in Fairfield County.

Takeya Taylor of Columbia was driving the wrong way around 2:35 a.m. Thursday in the southbound lanes of I-77 about five miles from Winnsboro when she hit another vehicle, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Taylor’s 2004 Mitsubishi hit a 2012 Hyundai driven by 48-year-old Lisa Jefferson of Charleston. Both drivers died at the scene.

Two passengers in Jefferson’s car were taken to area hospitals. One, 46-year-old Wallace Green Jr., later died; the condition of the other passenger was not known late Thursday.

Investigators say it appears Taylor, whose birthday was Thursday, had been drinking alcohol before the crash.

State troopers are still investigating the wreck.
