Beaufort teen charged with having guns on school property

An 18-year-old Beaufort student was charged with possessing weapons on school property Wednesday after a shotgun and a bolt-action rifle were spotted inside his vehicle, a police spokeswoman said.

A school administrator spotted the two weapons in plain view at 12:20 p.m. Monday while checking the parking lot at Beaufort High School, said Cpl. Hope Able of the Beaufort Police Department. Able said there was no danger to the school -- no threats were made nor were the gun displayed. The student was not on school grounds when the guns were found, she said.

Able said the student had reportedly gone hunting and left the guns in the vehicle. He was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center and released after posting a $10,000 bond, according to the jail log.
